{"id":12184,"date":"2023-09-06T11:45:44","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T18:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oceanecology.ca\/wp\/?p=12184"},"modified":"2024-10-30T15:28:58","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T22:28:58","slug":"fire-on-the-heights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oceanecology.ca\/wp\/2023\/09\/06\/fire-on-the-heights\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire on the Heights"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>On August 28<sup>th<\/sup>, we had the thunderstorm from hell.\u00a0 Lightning lashed, thunder boomed, and we all cowered in the cabin as the forces of Nature roared with wild violence around us.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For the first time in our years here in Port Neville, lightening struck the mountains behind our cabin.\u00a0 The storm brought a miserly amount of rain, barely enough to wet the soil, and so the conditions were ripe for fire.<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath, three fires burned on the ridges behind us.\u00a0 Now, like much of the rest of the province, we are on fire watch.\u00a0 The winds have been fierce, and we are downwind of one of the fires, which has left us very worried.\u00a0 Over the days since the storm, one of the three fires has been declared &#8220;Out&#8221; by the BC Wildfire Service.\u00a0 However, they don&#8217;t update their site unless new reports on a fire&#8217;s status are received, so the other two remain listed as &#8220;Out of Control&#8221;, including the one which concerns us the most.<\/p>\n<p>So now we wait &#8230;
